Hard Work, Quality Work – A message to all
“Everyone has a different type of brain and everyone has different talents. Not everyone can be Lionel Messi, Ronaldino, Pele’ or Maradona. But everyone can be the best version on themselves. Everyone can improve at soccer and we, as a coaching unit here with Prince William Courage, are determined to help you become the very best you can be. That might be a professional or it might be as a very good Collegiate player, VYSA State Team ODP player or VHSL High School Player. Who knows how good you can be – we certainly don’t know your limits, but we’re going to have fun stretching them. If you want to get as good as you can be, you’re going to have to work hard at your soccer, and you’re going to have to work with focus, with intensity and by thinking in the right way.”
A very simple message that gets soccer players focused not on whether they ‘have it or not’ but on working hard and working in the right way – these are the mediators of success not a mysterious innate ability or God-given talent. Yes this exists but so often as a destroyer of dreams rather than a creator of success.
Optimism is a quality switched on by convincing people that they can – that nobody really knows their true potential, and that any potential can only really be discovered when they work hard and they launch on working with excellence. If a player comes to you in a negative frame of mind because of poor play then the solution of fun, hard work and quality work should be close to your lips.
An outlook such as this fosters the spirit of optimism. It helps players face forward, towards their destination rather than away from their goals. Insist on hard work. Insist on quality work. They are the rod and staff of your coaching culture.
“With hard work and quality work anything can be overcome. You can, and you will, achieve to the very best of your ability with the kind of work We will demand from you.”
